Catch Employee Theft with Hidden Video Surveillance Cameras

Proving Someone Is Stealing From Work
Businesses lose millions of dollars each year due to theft and a good share of that loss is at the hands of dishonest employees.  An employee that steals not only costs the business profits and hurts the employer but, can also hurt the other employees as well.  But just how do you prove someone is stealing?

Proving Another Employee Is Stealing
If you are an employee and know one of your co-workers is stealing on a regular basis it really is your obligation to the right thing.  However, going to your employer or the police on your word alone is not going to do anyone any good.  You are going to need other witnesses to this co-workers behavior or at least some positive proof of what is happening.

One way of getting the proof you need is by placing a hidden camera in a place where your co-worker I taking things from.  If it is a store room or a supply cabinet placing the camera on a shelf where it can catch your co-worker in the act could be a good idea.  However, you better be pretty sure that you know for sure that your co-worker is stealing before you go hiding a camera in your work place without your employers knowledge.

If other employees are also aware of the co-workers action then once you have evidence ask them to write a statement verifying their own observations including dates, times, and what they witnessed being stolen.  Once you have the video evidence of a crime being committed as well as accompanying statements then inform your boss of what is going on.  After you inform your employer, offer him copies of the evidence you have collected.  Depending on what your employer decides to do once he is informed of your co-workers actions then the two of you may either want to go to the police together, or you may to choose to go alone, or you can leave it in the hands of your employer.

However, make sure you keep the originals of all the evidence just in case your employer decides to punish you instead of the real criminal.

Proving An Employee Is Stealing If You Are The Boss
If you are the employer or a manager of an establishment and suspect that one or more of your employees are stealing and wanted to find out exactly who there are several things you can do.  Check your inventory sheets and determine just what items are “disappearing” and then place a hidden surveillance camera in the areas that these items are stored.   If money is disappearing out of the till on a regular basis then post your equipment in that area where you can get a good view of both the till and whoever approaches it.

If larger items are going missing then you might want to place a hidden camera near the exits where you can get a clear picture of exactly what is going out of the door.  Avoid following anyone you suspect of stealing as this could be considered stalking.   Once you have evidence of who is stealing and what is being stolen you have a couple of options.  You can contact the police and show them your evidence or you can simply fire the employee.  If you fire the employee make sure you keep the evidence of their stealing in case they decide to sue you for terminating their employment.

No one wants to turn in a co-worker or employee for stealing but, stopping the crime and preventing more loss to the business you own and work for is in everyone's best interest.
